Carson Palmer, Arizona Cardinals close to extension
The topic of the Arizona Cardinals giving starting quarterback Carson Palmer a contract extension first arose earlier this season in mid-October after he tore up the Washington Redskins upon his return from a multi-week nerve issue. Palmer has done an excellent job of managing the Cardinals offense, consistently getting the ball to possession guy Larry Fitzgerald, and he’s also received plenty of help from playmakers like Andre Ellington and John Brown. Michael Floyd hasn’t been involved nearly as much as we thought he would be, but he’s yet another impressive weapon that Palmer can rely on.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reports that “signs are currently pointing” towards the Cardinals and Palmer agreeing to an extension very soon. These reports usually end up coming true, so keep a close eye out for any breaking news regarding a deal between both sides.
Palmer is making $8 million and is set to make $10 million next season, but he’s technically in a contract year since the final year of his deal is actually voidable. The Cardinals seemed to be impressed with the stability that Palmer affords them at the quarterback position, so extending him makes sense. Steve Keim and the organization, however, need to be careful, since Palmer is 34, and he isn’t a great QB; he’s just an average one. They need to make sure they don’t pay him too much, and it’s important for them to make sure that he doesn’t get too many years/security.
