Carson Palmer, Arizona Cardinals in contract negotiations

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer returned from his nerve issue last week to help lead the team to a victory over the Washington Redskins, as he formed a great hook-up with star wideout Larry Fitzgerald, who caught all six of Palmer’s passes thrown in his direction. For the second time in as many games this season, Palmer had two touchdowns with no picks, and he completed 63.6% of his passes for 250 yards (he completed over 64% of his passes for over 300 yards in a Week 1 win over the San Diego Chargers).

Palmer’s solid performances this season when healthy have seemed to impress the Cardinals organization, as they are interested in getting a contract extension done with the former Cincinnati Bengals and Oakland Raiders QB. The Arizona Republic’s Kent Somers reports that Cardinals GM Steve Keim stated that they have opened up contract negotiations with Palmer’s agent David Dunn, and the Cards would like to get a deal done before the end of the season; the 34-year-old is set to make $10 million in 2015, but it’s a voidable year.

Per Keim, Palmer has done a “great job” of leading the organization at the quarterback position, though I’m sure some people are skeptical that extending a 34-year-old QB is the right answer. Palmer’s done a solid job, but he’s only about an average QB overall. It all depends on how many years the Cardinals give him, and it will be interesting to see how much he makes relative to the $10 million he would be scheduled to earn in that voidable 2015 season.
