Washington Redskins should target Brandon Scherff

Earlier this week, I wrote a piece stating that the Washington Redskins should target Landon Collins in the upcoming NFL draft. But with no guarantee of Collins being available when they select, the Redskins will have to target a number of players throughout the draft. The Redskins have needs along the offensive line and on the backend of their defense. Last time, I made my case for why the Redskins should target Alabama safety, Landon Collins. This article will be discussing why the Washington Redskins should target Brandon Scherff.

Scherff is a 6 foot 5, 320 pound offensive tackle for the Iowa Hawkeyes. With Trent Williams already on board, the Washington Redskins aren’t in need of a left tackle. The team could be in the market for a right tackle, though. Scherff currently plays left tackle for the Hawkeyes, but his skills might better translate to right tackle in the pros.

As a run-blocker, Scherff is an outstanding talent. His work as pass-blocker could use some work, though. With that being said, a slide to right tackle would make sense — especially with Trent Williams holding down the left side of the offensive line. Not only would a move to right tackle allow for Scherff to further develop his pass blocking skills, but it would also provide the Washington ground game with a much needed boost.

There’s a chance that Scherff is the best run-blocker coming out of the 2015 NFL draft. His size and strength makes it easy for him to control opposing defenders in the run game. Meaning he is capable of getting to the second level to produce quality blocks for his runners.

There is also a chance that the Redskins snag Texas A&M left tackle, Cedric Ogbuehi. Ogbuehi appears to be the better pass-blocker out of the two, but lacks the run blocking ability that Scherff possesses. If Washington was in the the market for left tackle and not a right, I would suggest selecting Ogbuehi over Scherff. But that’s not the case, and that’s why I believe that Brandon Scherff should be selected over him.

If the Redskins choose to pass on Ogbuehi and Scherff, trading down could become a viable option for the team. LSU tackle, La’el Collins is a player that could make sense in that scenario. Collins has proven to be a strong run-blocker and, like Scherff, has room to grow as a pass-blocker. I do believe that Scherff is the best run-blocker out of the group, though.

Pairing Brandon Scherff with Trent Williams would provide the Washington Redskins with two talented tackles, while also improving their rushing attack.
