Chicago Bears will likely fire Mel Tucker
It’s unclear if the Chicago Bears will decide to fire head coach Marc Trestman, and GM Phil Emery’s job isn’t safe either. But the Bears did show some promise last season when they narrowly missed the playoffs, and Trestman worked some serious magic with journeyman quarterback Josh McCown. This is a “what have you done for me lately” league, though, and Trestman hasn’t done anything positive for the Bears organization this season. The team’s play-calling has been criticized throughout the season, and Jay Cutler and the offense have underperformed in a year in which they were expected to be a top-five unit.
Even though the offense has been the biggest disappointment in Chicago, the biggest issues with this team reside on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive coordinator Mel Tucker was expected to lose his job last offseason, but he lived to fight another year. It doesn’t look like he’ll make it to the 2015 season, as the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports, via NFL.com’s Conor Orr, that the Beas will likely cut ties with Tucker.
It’s a move that will surely be met by praise from most Bears fans, and I don’t see the harm in firing him. The issue is that he could simply be a scapegoat, because Emery deserves the brunt of the blame for the struggles of the Bears defense. He spent his entire offseason signing defensive ends, and his only legit upgrade in the secondary was the addition of rookie Kyle Fuller. While he did make some nice signings, he did a terrible job of “upgrading” the safety position by adding Ryan Mundy and M.D. Jennings when they required a much bigger upgrade.
