San Francisco 49ers to consider promoting Vic Fangio

The San Francisco 49ers and head coach Jim Harbaugh are fully expected to part ways, especially since the drama within the organization has hurt this team’s ability to compete this season. Although the 49ers are 7-5, they have been a disappointment thanks to an offense that hasn’t run as crisply as expected. Harbaugh can’t be faulted for much of the team’s issues this year, as they have dealt with injuries and suspensions on the defensive side of the ball, as well as disappointing seasons from Colin Kaepernick, Vernon Davis, and Michael Crabtree.

Per a source close to the Boston Globe’s Ben Volin, it’s a lock for the 49ers and Harbaugh to split at the end of the seasons, and Volin reports that the 49ers would like to higher a coach with a more toned down personality. I wonder if that has to do with the head coach-GM relationship, since we kept hearing about animosity between Trent Baalke and Harbaugh, and this led to some serious trade rumors last offseason.

Volin reports that the team will think about promoting Vic Fangio, though I wonder if they would prefer to add a marquee hire. With Greg Roman likely on the hot seat, I wonder if they would be more inclined to pick up an offense-minded head coach to help work with Kaepernick. That offense-minded head coach wouldn’t have to do much on defense due to the talent level on that side of the ball, as well as the presence of Fangio.
