New York Jets: Sheldon Richardson calls Geno Smith naysayers ‘quitters’
By Matt Reed
The New York Jets fell to 2-11 on Sunday, following a heartbreaking 30-24 overtime loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Gang Green fans are upset, and understandably so with the entire team, but the focal point of their disappointment is with quarterback Geno Smith. Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson called fans who have given up on Smith “quitters”, per ESPN’s Jane McManus.
Richardson continued his statement, “That’s how I feel. You go all-in with a guy, why not give him his chance?” The former Missouri Tiger was obviously sticking up for his quarterback, even though I’m sure that even he can’t be convinced that Smith is the long-term answer for the New York Jets.
"“Even though he does decent some, people think he does horrible,” Richardson said. “He’s still the guy at the end of the day and I applaud him for that. The position he’s in and the scrutiny he gets (is a lot).”"
The New York Jets are in utter disarray with head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik both on the hot seat, as well as poor performances from the quarterback position. In fairness to Smith, as well as Michael Vick, the two signal-callers aren’t the only problem that the team has.
Gang Green will be going back to the drawing board soon enough, as they search for a new head coach. Hopefully the next man who gets the job will be able to take a new quarterback under his wing and bring the New York Jets back to prominence. There are still three games remaining, but here are five potential replacements for Rex Ryan.
