St. Louis Rams find consistency, momentum at end of the year
By Ben Carter
The St. Louis Rams did something this past week that they haven’t done since FDR was the president of the United States: post consecutive shutout victories. Not only that, but the Rams also found a way to win back to back games for the first time since 2012. Its not only a huge morale boost to one of the youngest teams in the NFL, but it is also a huge momentum boost for a team on the outer most edge of the playoff race. Yes, the playoff race. The Rams sit at 6-7, and still mathematically alive in this years race.
Now the odds are almost 0 that the Rams actually make a spot in this years playoffs, but it is very possible that they find their way out of the NFC West basement. The 49ers are in shambles with the rumors about their coach Jim Harbaugh, and a very ugly loss to the Oakland Raiders (who the Rams beat 52-0), so it is possible that if the Rams can string together a few more wins this season, they can take third place in the division.
Looking at the remaining schedule, the Rams have a good chance at winning two of their last three games. They host the NFC West leading Cardinals on Thursday Night this week, which is a very winnable game. Cards QB Drew Stanton is a completely different player on the road. Arizona is 1-3 on the road with Stanton at the helm, and the Rams defense is starting to clique on all cylinders. The Cards are also in a bind when it comes to the injury report, both Andre Ellington and Tyrann Mathieu are likely out when they travel to St. Louis which is a huge advantage for the Rams, who are relatively healthy.
Then, the Rams host the disappointing New York Giants, which is another winnable game. Which, brings us to week 17, in Seattle. The Rams have played in Seattle the final week of the season every year since 2010, and every year they have lost. It is going to be a physical game, as it always is, but even if the Rams can’t find a way to win, they still could finish 8-8 this year; which is not only a positive seeing how many injuries they’ve struggled through, but also how difficult their schedule has been. It seems that heading into the homestretch of the season, the Rams are in a great position to become a contender heading into the offseason, if they can finish as strong as they’ve been playing in the recent weeks.
