It’s hard to believe that the New York Jets would be favored to win another game this season, but the Tennessee Titans are similarly in a bout with mediocrity in 2014. Both teams come into the contest sitting on a record of 2-11, good enough for the worst record in football.
The most intriguing aspect of this game is that the loser is one step closer to the number 1 pick in April’s Draft. Neither team has shown many bright spots, and I don’t expect either team to light it up on Sunday after the Titans lost quarterback Zach Mettenberger (shoulder) for the season. The former LSU Tiger showed a lot of poise and upside in his time as starter, especially given that his offensive line in poor to say the least and his supporting cast isn’t anything special.
For New York, we know that wholesale changes are coming at season’s end, so the speculating as to who will come in at head coach and quarterback has kicked up recently. Any Jets fan that watched the Heisman trophy ceremony on Saturday night was probably thinking that that guy from Oregon would look pretty good in another shade of green come 2015.
Right now, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans are the only teams that stand in the way of the Jets getting Marcus Mariota. The Jacksonville Jaguars are also ahead of Gang Green in the race for the number 1 pick, but it looks like they already have their franchise quarterback. I understand that this team needs a lot more in the offseason, but when you have a franchise quarterback at the helm, everything else looks far more insignificant.
Prediction:
My prediction on Sunday is more hopeful than anything. For anyone that says that you can’t be a true fan if you want your team to lose, I say that that’s hogwash. The New York Jets have been atrocious this year, and really the past four years, and they need all the help they can get this offseason. The only shred of success that the Titans have had this season was when their rookie quarterback was under center. Now that he is out, Jake Locker is back in the fold, who has had a history of success against New York. I’m not convinced that the Titans will need a quarterback in next year’s Draft, but just incase they are in the market for one, it would be best for the Jets to narrow the competition.
