Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell’s defense currently ranks as the 26th ranked defense in the NFL, and it’s not the first time the defense has been porous. So how has Perry Fewell maintained his job for this long if his defense is consistently poor?
Well, here’s my theory: prior to this year, the Giants have always been contending for a playoff spot, and they even won a Super Bowl with Fewell’s defense. This is the first year the Giants are floundering and the defense has been bad (last year the defense was the 8th best). In fact, for three of the past four christmases, Fewell’s defense has finished in the bottom seven for total defense.
I think it’s time to get rid of Fewell and bring in a new defensive coordinator. Maybe Seattle’s secondary coach Kris Richard, or perhaps Detroit’s defensive line coach Kris Kocurek (an interesting choice, especially if Ndamukong Suh seriously considers New York). Hell, why not give Steve Spagnuolo, currently a defensive assistant with the Ravens, a call and see if he’s interested?
To be quite frank, I don’t care if someone has to pass through the Candy Cane Forrest, through the sea of swirly twirly gum drops and then walk through the Lincoln Tunnel. The Giants need a new coordinator.
I would also be fine with seeing a new coordinator bring in a 3-4 system. With the emergence of Devon Kennard, the Giants might feel comfortable playing him outside and having Jameel McClain and Jon Beason play inside. A 3-4 defense could be a curveball, but it would be interesting to see.
