Although I expect the Giants to re-sign Antrel Rolle, they still need help at safety. Rolle is getting up there in age, and he’s really not the same player the Giants signed back in 2010. The defensive backfield was subject all season long, and the team desperately needs to improve. Stevie Brown and Quintin Demps are both set to become free agents, and it’s a real possibility that the Giants won’t bring back either safety.
Darian Stewart would provide veteran leadership as well as positive play. Boasting 4.5 speed, Stewart can add speed to a group of safeties that lacks it. With word circulating that the Giants are likely to retain Perry Fewell, the three-safety “Nascar” package will remain in the Giants defensive playbook.
Stewart is a physical player that won’t be getting compared to Earl Thomas any time soon, but he can offer a whole lot to a deplorable Giants safety unit.
Stewart’s teammate Will Hill is also set to hit the open market, but I don’t think there’s really any way the Giants will bring Hill back. Although Hill is probably head-and-shoulders more talented that Stewart, the Giants cut Hill because they felt they couldn’t trust him. New York gave Hill ample amounts of opportunities, and he squandered them all.
Although not the most talented safety in the NFL, Stewart will help the Giants in an area where they direly need it.
