Dec 20, 2014; Santa Clara, CA, USA; San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers (17) throws a pass against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi

B-. For the first half of the season, Philip Rivers was pretty dynamite. He completed over 71.4% of his passes a total of seven times with nine games of two or more passing touchdowns. In total, Rivers threw for 31 passing touchdowns and 4,286 passing yards in 16 games. From weeks 2-5, PR averaged an astonishing passer rating of 126.94. From weeks 1-8, the Alabama native averaged 2.5 touchdowns, 276.63 yards and .625 interceptions per game.

This season, Philip Rivers was pretty dynamite, except in the second half of the season when he wasn’t. Philip Rivers was too inconsistent and inaccurate during the latter part of the season for the Chargers to mount a real playoff push. In River’s last four games of 2014, the former NC State QB threw for 59.75% completion and eight interceptions. Sure, he did lead some incredible comebacks against the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers, but at the end of the day, he did not perform.

Many may ask why Rivers deserves a B- if “did not perform.” I will tell you why he does deserve such a recognition. Like Tom Brady of 2013, Philip Rivers played 2014 with the odds stacked against him every single week. Along with playing with numerous injuries (per Antonio Gates), Rivers had to deal with a horrendous offensive line which allowed 4.875 QB hits and 2.3 sacks per game. Don’t forget too that Rivers starting running backs were being shuffled around more rapidly than Vegas card dealers.

In essence, Rivers performed poorly statistically. But, given the current situation that he’s in, Philip Rivers performed admirably. Had his offensive line performed up to par and had his running backs been healthy, the Bolts would have easily taken the AFC West in a heartbeat.
. QB. San Diego Chargers.
