In a time when rough and tough was considered old-fashioned, Leslie O’Neal put the Flash in Flash Football. O’Neal and his 105.5 career sacks with the Chargers rank most all-time. His 132.5 career sacks during his entire career rank T-11th all time with Lawrence Taylor. Not only was O’Neal a great sack master, but he could defend the run as well.

Over his career, O’Neal had 572 tackles and 18 forced fumbles with the Bolts. During his rookie season, he had 12.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, two interceptions and 82 tackles, giving him undisputed Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 1986. He was also voted to the Pro Bowl six times and was first team All-Conference three times. While many may look at O’Neal and consider him a one trick pony, that perhaps could be the case. If he is a one trick pony, he performed that trick pretty darn well.

During his nine season tenure with the Chargers, O’Neal recorded 12 or more sacks seven times. It is this consistent production and savagery that makes him one of the best defensive players to ever dawn a Charger uniform. He was the J.J. Watt of the early 1990s. Surely Watt will go down as one of the best Texans in history. Surely Leslie should be one of the best Chargers. No offensive tackle could stop him, they only hoped to contain him.
