December 20, 2014; Santa Clara, CA, USA; San Diego Chargers defensive end Corey Liuget (94) scores a touchdown against San Francisco 49ers tackle Joe Staley (74) during the third quarter at Levi

Defensive Player of the Year: DE Corey Liuget

Typically I would say FS Eric Weddle should earn the Defensive Player of the Year honors considering that he lead the team in tackles with 114 tackles, but Liuget probably had a bigger impact on the defensive line than Weddle had on the secondary. In 2014, Liuget recorded 11 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two fumbles forced, two passes defended and 57 tackles. Liuget lead the team in sacks and tackles for loss and is the reason for him deserving DPOTY.

He deserves the award because of his ability to get to the QB and disrupt plays in the backfield in comparison with his teammates. He also improved his tackling abilities from the year prior seeing that he added 15 total tackles and eight tackles for loss in 2014 as compared to 2013. The number that really stood out for me was Liuget’s 11 tackles for loss. That type of production is grounds for immediate Defensive Player of the Year recognition.
