Stan Humphries, 1992-1997

Originally drafted by the Redskins, Humphries played six seasons for San Diego before retiring from football forever due to concussion problems. During his first four seasons, he amassed a record of 37-18 with his only losing season coming in 1997 (his last NFL season). Injuries riddled his career as he started 15 games only three times. Surprisingly, Humphries and 12 other quarterbacks share the record for longest pass in NFL history (99 yards).

The Louisiana native took the Bolts to the playoffs three times and had a 3-3 record with six touchdowns in six games. The problem with Humphries in the playoffs was his 13 interceptions and 51.8 completion percentage. But, somehow, someway during the 1994 playoffs, Humphries was able to lead the Bolts to their first and only Super Bowl in franchise history. They lost to the San Francisco 49ers, 49-26, as Jerry Rice had himself a field day against the San Diego secondary. The Hall of Famer caught 10 passes for 149 yards and three of Steve Young’s six touchdown passes.

Although Humphries’ San Diego career was short-lived, he still deserves recognition as one of the Chargers best quarterbacks. His 85 touchdowns and 16,085 yards rank fourth in Chargers history. If not for his sustained concussions, Humphries may have taken San Diego to the playoffs and maybe another Super Bowl appearance.
