San Diego Chargers: Top 10 Wide Receivers of All-Time
Lance Alworth, 1962-1970
Before Antonio Gates, before Kellen Winslow, before Charlie Joiner, before Garry Garrison and before Wes Chandler, there was Lance Alworth. Back when San Diego was in the AFL, Lance Alworth helped the Bolts become a team recognized by football fans who had not considered California a football state.
In his Hall-of-Fame career, Alworth caught 493 passes for 9,584 yards and 81 touchdowns. Between the years 1963-1969, Alworth had one of the greatest streaks of all-time. In those seven seasons, Bambi averaged 1,250 yards and 10.5 touchdowns on 64 receptions. What is even more amazing than that is that during that time his 8,750 receiving yards and 74 touchdowns came in just 95 games. That means that Alworth averaged 95.1 receiving yards and 0.7 touchdowns per game. Unbelievable.
Eventually Alworth finished out his career as a Dallas Cowboy, but his memory still lives on as the greatest Charger receiver to ever grace the football field. His fleet feet and soft hands make him one of the greatest in Chargers and NFL history at the WR position.
