San Diego Chargers: Top 10 Wide Receivers of All-Time
John Jefferson, 1978-1980
Even though he is not related to fictional T.V. character George Jefferson from All In The Family, John Jefferson delighted a wide array of Chargers fans during the late seventies and was a prime example of a career that ended too soon. His 3,431 yards, 36 touchdowns, 199 receptions and 17.2 yards per reception rank 15th, ninth, 18th and 34th in franchise history. The most impressive statistic of them all though would have to be his 76.2 yards per game during his three seasons with San Diego which ranks third all-time behind the great Lance Alworth and one season wonder Al Williams.
It’s unbelievable to think that after Jefferson amassed three straight 1,000-yard, 10-touchdown seasons he was traded to the Green Bay Packers after a contract dispute.
During his final season with the Bolts in 1980, Jefferson ranked first in the league in yardage and second in touchdowns with 1,340 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Jefferson was named an all-pro in his final two years and a pro-bowler in all three of his years with the Bolts. It’s a shame that the former Arizona State product fizzled out in Green Bay. His production rivaled that of Alworth and will probably won’t be passed by any Bolts receiver any time soon.
