Wes Chandler, 1981-1987

Originally with the New Orleans Saints, Chandler was acquired by the Chargers shortly after the 1981 season was underway. He finished his 1981 season with 857 yards and five touchdowns on 52 receptions in 12 games.

The season he is mainly known for is his 1982 season with San Diego when Chandler caught 49 passes for 1,032 yards and nine touchdowns. While that may seem like an average statistic, you must know that 1982 was a strike-shortened season that last only eight games. That means Chandler averaged over a touchdown and 129.0 yards per game which coincidentally is an NFL record that stands till this day. Chandler earned his first of three Pro Bowl nods that year and was voted as a first team All-Pro.

As for the rest of Chandler’s career, he was able to amass over 1,000 yards one other time in 1985 when he caught 67 passes for 1,199 yards and 10 touchdowns in 15 games (79.9 yards per game average).

Chandler’s career 373 receptions (), 6,132 yards (), 41 touchdowns () and 65.2 yards per game () all have high ranks in Chargers history. If Chandler had remained healthy and started every game of the Bolts season, he could have been ranked higher. Unfortunately though, his career was shortened.
