San Diego Chargers: Top 10 Running Backs of All-Time
Chuck Muncie, 1980-1984
Originally a New Orleans Saint, Chuck Muncie definitely made his name known as a San Diego Charger. If his 3,309 career yards (sixth all-time), 773 carries (sixth), 43 touchdowns (second) and 64.9 yards per game (fourth) in five seasons with the Chargers didn’t already convince you that he is one of the best, then perhaps his 516 career playoff yards, three touchdowns, 4.7 yards per carry and 86.0 yards per game may just do the job.
Muncie, a two-time pro-bowler with the Bolts, had the best season of his career in 1981 when he rushed for 1,144 yards and a monstrous 19 touchdowns on 251 carries for a 4.6 yards per carry and 76.3 yards per game average.
Not many people know though that Muncie was also a great receiver. His career-best 1981 season saw him catch 43 passes for 362 yards which is just a small portion of his 138 career receptions, 1,237 yards and two touchdowns while with the Chargers.
Muncie deserves the ranking he has not because of his yards or his receptions, but his ability to score touchdowns. If there was a running back who deserves the “all he does is score touchdowns” phrase, it’s Muncie. He was able to score double-digit rushing touchdowns not just in 1981, but also in 1983 when he rushed for 12 scores. Had Muncie not fumbled the ball 32 times over the span of his Chargers career (ranked tops among running backs and fifth all-time), perhaps he would have seen more success than he did.
Considering he was in a powder blue for only five seasons, Muncie’s production is unrivaled by any Chargers back and is the reason why he deserves his place on this list.
