Seattle Seahawks Should Sign Andre Johnson
By Donnie Druin
As NFL Free Agency is heating up, marquee names the likes of Ndamukong Suh, Julius Thomas, Frank Gore and Darrelle Revis are entertaining other potential suitors for their talents. While some have already found a home (Suh is expected to sign with Miami, Thomas expected to sign with Jacksonville), nothing is an absolute guarantee at this point.
The thought process was that no matter the situation, it was always a guarantee that wide receiver Andre Johnson would remain with the Houston Texans. Johnson, chosen third overall in the 2003 NFL Draft, has been considerably the face of the franchise since his arrival in only the team’s second year in the league, holding practically every franchise receiving record during his 12-year tenure with Houston.
However, it was announced on Monday that Johnson would no longer be a part of the organization’s plans moving forward.
"“No player in the history of this franchise has represented the team, city and community in a more professional way. Andre is a Hall of Fame caliber player and we appreciate his years of service and contributions to our team.”- Texans general manager Rick Smith said in a statement on HoustonTexans.com"
The seven time Pro-Bowler is now available on the market, ready for a fresh start with a new team. At age 33, Johnson still has plenty left in the tank and is ready to be part of a winning culture after departing with the Texans. With teams already coming out and showing interest in Johnson, one team provides the perfect fit: The Seattle Seahawks.
The Seahawks have been long overdue for a number one presence at the wideout position. Last year Percy Harvin, who even in Seattle wasn’t exactly a polished number-one receiver, was shipped to the New York Jets and thus Doug Baldwin was inserted into the role. Most will agree that Baldwin is a good, but not great talent, and is better off starring in a secondary role on the depth chart.
Should Johnson take his talents to the Emerald City, both the Seahawks and Johnson would personally benefit.
Seattle would receive an immediate and instant upgrade at the wide receiver spot. With Johnson, the Seahawks would obtain a well-established, polished threat in the passing game. In addition, Johnson brings a veteran voice and leadership qualities to not only the receiving corps but the whole locker room as well.
With the recent success Seattle has had, Johnson would now become part of a winning culture. With the pieces to a championship puzzle already in place, Johnson would easily slide in and contribute to the offense.
A fresh face on the free agent market, Johnson’s people should be getting in touch with the Seahawks organization and vice-versa. Johnson would be able to start over and immediately compete for a championship. Seattle would fill a much needed void in their offense and provide quarterback Russell Wilson with a pure starting receiver.
Should the Seahawks add Andre Johnson to their already talented roster, opponents better gear up for a long season in 2015.
