New York Jets: Make statement with Darrelle Revis signing

As reported by Rich Cimini of ESPN.com, the New York Jets have come to an agreement with cornerback Darrelle Revis.

In what might possibly be one of the boldest free agency moves the Jets have done in years, they managed to bring “Revis Island” back to the city that never sleeps. I’ve always believed that you should go big or go home as the Jets truly went big and went after the top cornerback in the free agency market.

In a deal that will no doubt make Revis the highest paid cornerback in the NFL, this move instantly turns the Jets into contenders again. It cost them about $70 million to reunite with Revis but it’s a five-year contract that should see him instantly return to form with the team that originally drafted him.

It’s no secret that their defensive line is one of the strongest parts of their defense as now their defensive secondary will also thrive thanks to Revis and the also newly-acquired Buster Skrine. Both are major upgrades over anyone the Jets had at cornerback last season and will be quite the dynamic duo.

I’m happy to see that Revis didn’t hold too much of a grudge against the Jets due to their history of having issues when discussing his contract. Let’s face it, Revis is the best of the best and has a championship ring to prove it. Not only does this bode well for the Jets but it also hits the New England Patriots where it hurts most.

Could this new regime of general manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles be the duo that turns the tide in the favor of the Jets taking over in the AFC East? Once they get their quarterback situation fixed and continue adding some missing pieces to the team, the Jets might be right back in the hunt for tops in the division.

I will say though, as a Jets fan practically my entire life, it’s good to see the Jets be aggressive and make landing Revis a high priority. Last year when then general manager John Idzik stated that he will “build through the draft”, it left much to the imagination that with plenty of money, he wouldn’t do much.

Needless to say, his lack of aggression has landed him out of a job with the Jets and rightfully so since he didn’t understand what it took to secure top talent.

Maccagnan is a smart football man and has already shown he is in it for the long-term. It’s not easy to make all these moves and go after players that will fill immediate needs but so far, he’s delivered in his short time as general manager. I can only imagine, there is more to come as the Jets start rebuilding towards a much brighter future.

It’s always a great situation to be in when you have someone that knows how to address major needs and not try to sugar coat things to the media. When Maccagnan said in his introductory press conference when he first arrived he would be aggressive in free agency, he truly meant it just backed it up immensely. Signing Revis proves that a new era of Jets football is about to begin.

Overall, the AFC East sure is shaping up to be quite the competitive division once again in the NFL. With Ndamukong Suh to the Miami Dolphins, LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills, and the Patriots losing Revis to the Jets, this could be a dogfight until the very end come next season. I for one am excited that unlike last year, the Jets so far look like they’ll be competitive this time around.
