The Raiders add to yet another position with the signing of former Philadelphia Eagles safety Nate Allen. Allen was a member of the Eagles’ pass defense that was ranked 31st in the league and as a result he and CB Cary Williams have not been re-signed.
Tyvon Branch was the initial starter for the Raiders but for the second year in a row he was on injured reserve before week 4. Brandian Ross and Ras-I Dowling took turns being victimized by opposing quarterbacks but Ross showed signs of improvement in the final weeks of the season.
Allen may not be a starter right away but he brings much needed depth after safety Usama Young was cut after finishing the season IR. There is also the concern of how well Charles Woodson can hold up at 38 years old so Allen can provide some cover there as well.
Nate Allen also had four interceptions last season, two more than any Raiders DB other than Woodson. This is yet another signing to add to the talent level of the team as a whole but is decidedly unspectacular which follows Reggie McKenzie’s MO this offseason.
