Chicago Bears: Good coaching will make a difference in 2015
By Nick Ziegler
The 2014 season was a total disaster for the Chicago Bears on both sides of the ball and that showed with a 5-11 record – the worst in the NFC North.
Due to that dreadful finish, change was expected and it came on the coaching staff. Marc Trestman was brought in to be the head coach before the 2013 season with the reputation of being one of the best offensive minds in football.
Trestman proved to be a failure with the Bears as their offense and quarterback Jay Cutler digressed. Next season, Trestman will be back as an offensive coordinator, this time for the Baltimore Ravens.
The Denver Broncos, like the Bears, had a disappointing 2014 season based on their expectations and that surprisingly led to change on the sidelines. After the Broncos parted ways with head coach John Fox, he quickly became one of the best coaching options available this season and the Bears were wise to snag him quickly.

In his four seasons as the Broncos’ head coach, Fox had an excellent record thanks in part to the addition of Peyton Manning in 2012. In 2011, Fox led the Broncos to an 8-8 record with Tim Tebow as his starting quarterback for the most part. With Tebow at quarterback, Fox helped create a great running game, and the defense made up for what the Broncos were lacking at the quarterback position. Denver shockingly won a playoff game that season against the Pittsburgh Steelers and it could have very well been Fox’s best coaching job.
After Manning arrived in Denver, the Broncos quickly became a powerhouse in the AFC. In Fox’s final three seasons in Denver, he compiled a 38-10 record. The playoffs were where the Broncos came up short however, as they were eliminated in their first game two of the three seasons that Fox and Manning were together. Their most successful season was in 2013, as they reached Super Bowl XLVIII, but then were run out of New Jersey by the Seattle Seahawks, 43-8.

The most recent playoff loss for the Broncos was a tough one to swallow against a Indianapolis Colts team, that besides Andrew Luck, was lacking in talent compared to the Broncos.
With Fox in Chicago, he was able to build a very impressive coaching staff to help lead the Bears for next season. Adam Gase will be following Fox to Chicago off being the offensive coordinator the past few seasons with the Broncos. Gase also had some head coaching interviews of his own this offseason.
Fox was also able to land himself a very good defensive coordinator in Vic Fangio from the San Francisco 49ers. Jack Del Rio was the defensive coordinator in Denver and accepted the head coaching position of the Oakland Raiders, but Fangio should have no problem working with Fox.
The Bears certainly have holes on their roster. But with a poor coaching staff, those holes can look like craters as it did for much of last season for the Bears. In 2015, with Fox and company at the helm, the Bears should be able to improve on their poor showing this past season.
