Dallas Cowboys: 5 late-round RBs to keep an eye on
Oct 30, 2014; Louisville, KY, USA; Louisville Cardinals running back Michael Dyer (5) rushes into the end zone for a touchdown during the fourth quarter against the Florida State Seminoles at Papa John
Michael Dyer
Louisville
Height: 5-8
Weight: 218 pounds
Grade: Senior
Dyer is a player who has a 4.58 40-yard dash at the combine and is described by analysts as a player who has “good quickness” as the 2015 NFL Draft nears.
Rob Rang of CBSSports.com wrote the following in his description of Dyer:
"“Very good forward lean and keeps his legs chugging through contact to generate extra yards. Good quickness to and through the hole. Darts through tight spaces and possesses the vision and agility to break into the open. Quick accelerator, getting to top speed very quickly and ruining pursuit angles.”"
What is hurting Dyer’s stats is the fact he has character issues, sending him to the bottom of the NFL Draft, plus Rang wrote he needs work on catching the football.
While at Louisville, Dyer rushed the football 154 times for a total of 704 yards and seven touchdowns the past two seasons. In 2010 and ’11 while with the Auburn Tigers, Dyer really had some really nice stats.
In those two seasons at Auburn, he carried the football 424 times for 2,335 yards and 15 touchdowns. For his collegiate career, Dyer totaled 3,039 yards on 578 carries and 22 touchdowns. The running back averaged 5.3 yards per carry in his four years of collegiate football.
How can those numbers translate to the NFL, as what seemed to be his biggest problem in college wasn’t the football field, but the classroom, as he was declared academically ineligible.
He’s played in big games (he was a part of the most recent Auburn National Championship team) and I believe if he’s able to learn the NFL playbook, he could be a game-changer, diamond-in-the-rough type of player in the draft.
Dyer is well worth taking a chance on in this draft, and whoever does take that gamble could be hitting the jackpot.
