The Raiders already signed a tight end earlier in free agency in former Buffalo Bill Lee Smith but Smith is primarily a blocker and will function more as a 6th offensive lineman than as a receiver. His height at 6’6″ is intriguing as a red zone weapon but the Raiders need a second receiving tight end to give Mychal Rivera some much needed competition.

James Casey might be just the man they need and he will come at a very cheap price. Casey has spent the last two years of his career in Philadelphia after spending the first four with the Houston Texans. He played tight end at Rice University but his first three seasons with the Texans he was listed as a fullback and of course did not figure much in to the passing game.

He is obviously an accomplished blocker but in 2012 the Texans discovered that he could be a serviceable tight end and formed an excellent one-two punch at the position with Owen Daniels. Casey ran a 4.6 40 coming out of college and 6’3″ he possesses a good combination of size and speed. He may not be a game breaker at the position but aside from Rivera the Oakland Raiders do not have much talent at the position. That alone makes Casey worth a look and as mentioned earlier, he would come very cheap.

Here are some highlights of James Casey’s 2012 season with the Houston Texans:
