Philadelphia Eagles: A Case for Kelly (Green)

Uniforms are like art: Subjective. I may think a Jackson Pollock looks like someone kicked over a bunch of paint cans in the dark on their way to the kitchen for a midnight snack. You may think that same Pollock tells the story of political corruption and the rising of the oppressed classes.

Okay, sure… maybe if I squint?

So, I get that there’s no universal metric I can use to convince the world that the Philadelphia Eagles need to bring back their old kelly-green uniforms. No set of stats to which I can point. No evidence that I can show you.

But my argument is sound: the old ones look better.

See?

Now, I am not saying that the current Eagles uniforms are the NFL equivalent of a bunch of paint cans exploding onto a canvas. They look intentional, to say the least.

But they look dated. They look like something born out of (and best suited to stay a part of) the 1990’s.

When they were announced and unveiled they were super-fly. And Ricky Watters wore them well.

Midnight greens, like parachute pants and frosted tips, were undeniably cool.

And I remember arguing exactly that point with my father.

Well, it’s 2015. And, dad… you were right (Personal note: no one share this article with my dad. He doesn’t need to know I’m admitting defeat.)

See, what my dad understood that I didn’t was that the Eagles’ uniforms already had something that’s hard to come by: timelessness.

That Eagles haven’t won a Super Bowl… it’s been a good long time since they’ve won much of anything. One could make the argument, historically, that they haven’t gotten a tremendous number of things right in their 82 years.

But one thing they nailed? That silver wing against that kelly-green helmet.

If I’m being honest? I want it all. And I want it my way. I want the majestic bird with the football in his clutches. I want to do away with all the shadows. I want the high white and kelly striped socks. I want these…

But I’d settle for that color back; I’d settle for kelly-green: Eagles green.  And what better time?  When has their been more upheaval? New systems in place on the field. Radical shifting of the front office. Old stars out the door. New talent being welcomed in. Heck they’ve even got a coach named Kelly for crying out loud… the writing is on the wall, people!

There was some talk, last August, that the team was considering the move back. Some hope.  But the rumor is that Christina Weiss Lurie (ex-wife of owner Jeff Lurie and Eagles’ minority owner) is anti-kelly-green.

So this is a direct appeal to her:

Christina. Ms. Weiss… Lurie. It’s time to let go of the past. By embracing the even-more-past. It’s time for the midnight to end and for the Eagles to go back to brighter days. No, it won’t make them faster. It won’t put a better safety on the field next to Malcolm Jenkins. It won’t make people stop guessing as to whether Chip Kelly is happy with his quarterbacks.

It won’t make the Philadelphia Eagles a better football team in any way, shape, or form.  But whether they’re on their way to greatness. Doomed to mediocrity. Or poised for a major fall… … They’ll look good doing it in these:
