Dallas Cowboys: Two later round CB draft possibilities

facebooktwitterreddit

Let’s all assume the Dallas Cowboys work on their defensive line, wide receiver and running back depth in the first three rounds of the 2015 NFL Draft.

It is a possibility that could actually happen.

That leaves the Cowboys with a fourth, fifth and two seventh round selections to add to their cornerback depth when the third day of the 2015 NFL Draft arrives on Saturday, May 2.

With that comes the possibility the Cowboys might use two of those four picks to try to hit a home run in trying to find a couple corners to make their defense a better unit in ’15.

Here are two players the Cowboys could use to solidify their cornerback position when the third day of the draft arrives.

Jacoby Glenn (6-0, 179 pounds) is a good athlete with a nice 40-yard dash time of 4.64 and a 34 inch vertical leap at the 2015 NFL Combine. With a player like Glenn, out of the University of Central Florida, the Cowboys would get a player who could not only become a solid pro, but be a steal with the fourth round projection he’s been given by CBS Sports.

With his projected draft position being the aforementioned fourth round, one plus about Glenn is he was noticed for his play at the collegiate level due to the fact he was named to the All-America team by the Associated Press this past season.

According to Shannon Owens-Green of the Orlando Sentinel, Glenn was a second-team selection, and had the stats to back it up:

"“Glenn finished the regular season ranked No. 3 in the nation in interceptions (7) and passes defended (18) and was recently named the co-defensive player of the year for the American Athletic Conference.”"

We know the American Athletic Conference (AAC) isn’t in the Big 4 when it comes to football at the collegiate level, but still, being named to the All-America team is something not to overlook as well.

With a player like Glenn, I believe his positives out-weigh his weaknesses.

According to Dane Brugler of CBS Sports, Glenn does need to work on a few things if he wants to have success in the NFL:

"“Inconsistent pursuit angles and lacks the power to get away with attacking off-balance. Needs to mature his practice habits and learn what it means to be a professional.”"

Brugler also has some solid feedback on Glenn as well, with the draft and scouting expert writing:

"“Good height and length for the position with room to get stronger. Aggressively drives on the ball in front of him and arrives with top-shelf competitiveness.”"

Competitiveness is the word I like to see when it comes to the Cowboys drafting a cornerback.

Not to say the current group of corners on the Cowboys roster aren’t competitive, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a competitive rookie come in to training camp and boost the overall play of the current CBs on the roster to make them improve their play either.

A player like Glenn in the fourth round isn’t out of the realm of possibility for the Cowboys.

Another player I’m interested in for the Cowboys is further down in the draft rankings and projections, that being Ladarius Gunter, a 6-1, 202 pound cornerback out of the University of Miami.

Gunter is similar to Glenn in the fact he ran a 4.69 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine in February and his vertical jump is 33.5 inches.

Gunter has what I want the Cowboys to add to their defense … good speed and height.

According to Patrick Magee of the Biloxi (Miss) Sun Herald following the Senior Bowl three months ago, Gunter “made a strong showing,”

"Magee wrote: “Gunter had the best statistical performance of any of the corners, North or South, and answered the bell each time he had to make a tackle in the open field. Gunter registered four tackles, the most of any of the corners.”"

According to Rob Rang of CBSSports.com he does write about strengths of Gunter as well:

Sure he has some weaknesses, but every player in the NFL Draft does, so with experts like Rob Rang saying Gunter “glides rather than explode as a runner” doesn’t scare me away.

"Rang wrote: “Trusts his eyes and is aggressive towards the ball, whether in coverage or in run support. Shows good hand-eye coordination to rip at the arms of receivers as the ball arrives.”"

Being that Gunter is a Day 3 projection in the draft, he’s worth keeping tabs on. With his athleticism, height and weight at the cornerback position, along with his solid speed, maybe he could potentially be a player the Cowboys look to drafting in the fifth round.

Currently the Cowboys have just two CBs who are 6-0 or taller, so maybe some additional height will help them compete more with some of the better wide receivers in the NFL.

It is certain the Cowboys will be adding to their cornerback depth in the 2015 NFL Draft, and these are just two players whom they could use a later selection on if they decide to work on other aspects of the team on the first two days of selecting players.

What CBs would you want to see the Cowboys select in the fourth through seventh rounds of the draft?
