While there are likely quite a few people who would like to see Melvin Gordon here at number one, Todd Gurley still has this spot reserved despite a season with quite a few disappointments.
Gurley was expected to compete for the Heisman Trophy early on in the season, and was putting up dominant numbers each time he touched the field. He ended up playing in just six games all season long, but still put up 911 yards and nine touchdowns on 123 carries. After that hot start, he got into trouble by accepting money for autographs and then tore his ACL in his first game back from suspension.
What is a good comparison for Gurley as the NFL Draft continues drawing closer? NFL.com believes that Gurley is a similar player to Marshawn Lynch, which is a glowing comparison to say the least. His combination of strength and speed fits very closely with that comparison, and can be seen in one clip of a 55-yard touchdown that he had against Buffalo.
Being able to absorb the first hit, bump it outside and then continue up the field while breaking another tackle or two is exactly the type of physicality that has made both Lynch and Adrian Peterson as successful as they have been.
There are still some concerns surrounding his ACL tear, but athletes have shown the ability to bounce back well from that type of injury. One particular situation that comes to mind is Adrian Peterson’s ACL tear. Gurley is a fierce competitor, and he isn’t going to allow this injury to hold him back from a successful football career.
Fans should expect to see Gurley return to his dominant form, and become a very dangerous running back at the next level.
