1. Sammie Coates, WR, Auburn
If you’re a fan of watching college football on Saturdays, you’re probably familiar with Sammie Coates out of Auburn. He’s taken center stage several times over the past two seasons, including in the 2014 National Championship Game.
During his sophomore and junior campaigns he racked up 76 catches for 1,643 yards and 11 touchdowns.
The Seahawks could use his 4.4 speed on the outside and his playmaking ability in general. However, there are concerns about Coates between the ears, as he often has trouble focusing and with dropped passes.
Coates is the kind of player that needs structure like Seattle would provide, because in the wrong environment he will likely struggle to stay engaged. During his college career he typically played well in big games, including a 206-yard, two touchdown performance against Alabama this past year.
While drafting him could be considered a project of sorts, Coates has natural athletic ability that you cannot coach. He may not be a regular contributor right out of the gate, but his ceiling is higher than most at the wide receiver position. If he falls to the Seahawks in the fourth round, he’s definitely a guy to consider.
