Dallas Cowboys: Will team land a CB in Round 1?

The 2015 NFL Draft will officially begin tonight at 8 p.m.ET and for the Dallas Cowboys as they sit and wait for the 27th overall selection to arrive the question still remains, What position will the NFC East champions select?

Unless they somehow trade up and select one of the two top rated running backs in the draft, the consensus seems to be “America’s Team” will be selecting a defensive player, but if we know anything about Jerry Jones and Co. it is sometimes they throw a curveball in the draft process.

I can’t recall a draft where there has been so much indecision amongst the experts as to what position the Cowboys will select in a draft.

Look at CBS Sports and their four draft experts as to who they have the Cowboys drafting:

Rob Rang — Marcus Peters (cornerback)

Dane Brugler — Shaq Thompson (outside linebacker)

Pete Prisco — Byron Jones (cornerback)

Will Brinson — Alvin Dupree (defensive end)

The experts at ESPN Insider in Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay have the Cowboys, who were 12-4 last season (along with one playoff win) with following selections in their final first round mock drafts:

Mel Kiper Jr. — Preston Smith (defensive end)

Todd McShay — Byron Jones (cornerback)

There is also the lone mock draft of NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock, which he released on Wednesday night. He has the Cowboys drafting defense as well:

Mike Mayock — Landon Collins (conerback)

In just those seven mock drafts alone the consensus is four of the seven experts have the Cowboys selecting a cornerback, while the others have a defensive end or outside linebacker as the choice.

It will be exciting to see which position the Cowboys feel is their biggest need, because for starters their cornerback play hampered them a lot this past season, as did their pass rush.

In the Divisional Round of the playoffs, the Green Bay Packers took full advantage of the poor play at both positions by the Cowboys, but the pass rush seemed to be worse on that day … by a hair.

If the Cowboys select Peters from Washington (at cornerback), who I feel is the best player at the cornerback position in this draft, besides his attitude issues with coaches this past year with the Huskies there isn’t a lot to worry about with him.

The Cowboys have shown this offseason (and in the past) they aren’t afraid to take a chance on players with “checkered pasts,” so I don’t believe there would be any problems with him if they decide to draft him.

With the leadership on the field by the Cowboys, I highly doubt Peters would have the same type of attitude as a rookie in “Big D” than he did in Washington as the veteran on the team.

Nov 29, 2014; Louisville, KY, USA; Louisville Cardinals wide receiver Kai De La Cruz (12) catches a pass under the pressure of Kentucky Wildcats defensive end Alvin Dupree (2) during the second half at Papa John

If Peters is off the board or the Cowboys pass on him, I believe the Cowboys should select the best available pass rusher on their board, because that has been a downfall of the team as well for more than one season.

Looking at the above mocks by the experts, it would be like hitting the lottery if Dupree fell to the 27th selection, but I highly doubt he will … but if he did, how much more improved would the Cowboys’ pass rush be after that selection?

Either way, if the Cowboys are smart they will stay away from adding to their offense in the first round with the 27th overall selection and work on tinkering their defense, catching it up with their already stellar offense.

What are your thoughts? Tell us the player you want the Cowboys to select in the first round?
