The ‘best, safest and most logical’ scenario: Brandon Scherff, offensive lineman, Iowa

I’ve been on the Brandon Scherff bandwagon since day one.

I think out of all the prospects, Scherff is the best way for the Giants to go. Drafting him wouldn’t be the sexiest pick, but if the Giants want to win now, Scherff is the guy the Giants should select with the ninth-overall pick. Whether he’s playing tackle or guard, the immediate impact Scherff will provide the Giants with will be something that could propel the team to a playoff berth.

The former Iowa Hawkeye has already received some love in the media from current and former Giants players, too.

“I like the kid from Iowa. Just from what I’ve seen. Seems like a tough kid,” Justin Pugh said, when asked if he had a preference as to whom the Giants pick, according to Giants.com. “He’s (Scherff) a tough guy … I’m just looking forward to getting a guy in here who wants to work and do things the right way and has the right attitude, and I’ve heard the kid is great, so I’d love to have him.”

Scherff also received praise from a two-time Super Bowl champion.

“He’s strong enough in the run game to move at the point of attack at defensive linemen and anchor down against the power rush. He has the movement and hand placement in pass pro (protection) to redirect and punch and anchor down against those bull rushers and those big interior defensive linemen,” former Giants tackle David Diehl said, according to Giants.com.

It’s not hard to understand why Scherff has received so much praise from the Giants organization. He’s a big, nasty, mean player who will fight until the echo of the whistle. He’s an offensive lineman who’s reminiscent of old-school Giants linemen like Shaun O’Hara and Diehl.

Physical attributes aside, the versatility Scherff has will go a long way for the Giants. NFL.com’s Mike Mayock thinks Scherff could make the transition inside to guard, which would give the entire Giants offensive line a boost.

However, if the Giants want him at right tackle, then Pugh will move to left guard, which would still be a major improvement for the Giants O-line. Scherff is the plug-and-play kind of lineman who the Giants have been lacking for a very long time.

To be completely honest; New York could be one solid offensive lineman away from taking its offense to the next level. Based on what Scherff has displayed this offseason, he seems to be the best candidate to fill that role.
