Loser: Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs definitely went out on a limb on their first round selection in the 2015 NFL Draft. They selected cornerback Marcus Peters out of Washington with the 18th overall pick. There is no doubt that Peters is an elite athlete and could be a great addition to this defense, but does the risk outweigh the potential reward? Some people believe Peters is definitely worth the risk, but I am not sold.
Peters has some major character issues and those issues ultimately led to him being kicked off of the Huskies (his collegiate team). However, his pure skill and instincts still impressively landed him in the first round; someone was going to pull him off the board in the first round. Although I don’t think the Chiefs should have been the team to do it.
He plays cornerback and defense isn’t what the Chiefs needed to address in the first round of this year’s draft. Kansas City had the seventh best defense in the NFL in 2014 and that is literally their strength as a team. It’s offense was ranked 25th in the league, yet it chose to bolster its defensive backfield. Wide receiver Nelson Agholor out of USC was available for selection, as were multiple impressive offensive linemen.
As it is, the Chiefs went with their gut and they feel like they can keep a player like Peters in check — here’s to hoping head coach Andy Reid can do it.
