It looked like Delmas would actually have a second straight season with 16 appearances, but, sadly, it wasn’t to be. In fact, Delmas played in 13 games before tearing his ACL, and while he will be back in time for training camp (and could make it back in time for minicamp), it’s a tough blow to a player who has had dreadful luck with injuries (particularly knee issues).

For the most part, Delmas played well in first season with the Dolphins as Chris Clemons‘s replacement, as he made up for his lack of big plays (just one pick and three PDs) by just about never getting burned. Seriously, Pro Football Focus had him tracked with just 6.8 yards per reception allowed, and while that does flatter him, the point is that he was a plus player in coverage for the Dolphins.

He’s a big key for this secondary, too, because his dependability in coverage means plenty with question marks at cornerback, with Grimes being the obvious exception there. Delmas missed ten tackles and played better in 2013 with the Detroit Lions, but he was solid.

It’s hard to trust Delmas’s ability to stay healthy, but he is progressing well from last season’s ACL tear and is a trustworthy player on the field. He and Jones definitely form a great tandem of starting safeties, and if both are healthy, safety is indeed a big strength for this team.
