Green Bay Packers: Davante Adams the MVP of OTAs

Few players on the Green Bay Packers roster have garnered the hype that Davante Adams has over the past month. After quarterback Aaron Rodgers heaped praise onto the second year receiver, Mike McCarthy singled out Adams as the MVP of OTAs earlier today as his minicamp press conference, which is detailed in full by Tyler Dunne of the Journal Sentinel.

"“I would say Davante Adams, if you wanted a clear illustration of a player taking a jump in his second year, you just saw it. He’s been tremendous in OTA’s and he has more in front of him. He’s done a  great job in strength and conditioning. If you picked a MVP or an All-Star, he’d be at the top of the list.”"

Let’s not forget that fantasy football has played a huge role in the chatter surrounding Davante Adams in football circles, as well. After coming on very strong in the latter stages of 2014, including a dominant showing versus the Dallas Cowboys, many have placed Adams atop their lists of “breakout” or “sleeper” wide receiver candidates in 2015.

Adams caught 38 passes on 66 targets in 2014, with several missed connections that can be easily traced back to miscommunication or his lack of chemistry with Rodgers earlier in the season. That was tidied up over the second half and the reports coming out of OTAs, including the imaginary accolade from coach McCarthy, strongly suggest that Adams and Rodgers will connect on a much higher percentage of their pass attempts in year two.

His 446 yards and three touchdowns won’t be impossible to double, while a season where Adams tops 700 yards and five scores should be the floor of his expectations. Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb afforded the Green Bay Packers one of the league’s most talented wide receiving duos in 2014, but also one of the league’s most top-heavy attacks.

Along with tight end Richard Rodgers, Davante Adams will be critical to the Packers ability to adapt to game situations by offering the offense flexibility within the scheme. Nothing counts until kickoff, but Adams continues to appear fully poised to take a significant jump as a sophomore.
