Green Bay Packers: Andrew Quarless arrested in South Beach

Green Bay Packers tight end Andrew Quarless has been arrested in South Beach, Florida, on charges of discharging a firearm in public. Tim Elfrink of the Miami New Times was first with the story early today.

Quarless was reportedly involved in a fight early Saturday morning (translation: very late Friday night), which culminated in him firing a gun into the ground twice. After trying to flee the scene, Quarless was apprehended by officers shortly after. Quarless has been with the Green Bay Packers since being selected in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

While splitting time with rookie Richard Rodgers for the Packers in 2014, Quarless caught 29 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns. Despite extremely pedestrian numbers through the early stages of his career, Quarless has never lacked confidence. This offseason, the 26-year old has repeatedly predicted a breakout campaign, even suggesting he could enter the Rob Gronkowski level of tight ends this coming season.

The Miami Beach Police Department will be releasing more information later today, but this has not been a good week for the Packers. Datone Jones was recently suspended for one game after violating the league’s substance abuse policy, while Letroy Guion could still face a suspension of his own for an offseason arrest in Florida.

Green Bay has traditionally steered clear of these headlines, so depending on the information gathered from the investigation, it will be interesting to see how they handle Quarless.

The time between minicamps and training camp is traditionally a hot zone for NFL players meeting the law. This period and the months directly following the end of the playoffs represent the two true “off” periods for players, who continue to be unaware that good things simply don’t happen at 5:30 in the morning in South Beach.
