But
If the starting quarterback position continues to give away the football at the same alarming rate as in the recent past, then any strides the team has made on defense will be a moot point.
From 2009-12, then-Jets signal-caller Mark Sanchez committed 23, 14, 26 and 26 turnovers, respectively, in four seasons with the franchise. The last two years, Geno Smith has coughed up the ball a combined 41 times while the rest of the club has committed just 12 turnovers in 32 contests.
The latter is now under the watch of offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, who apparently likes what he sees so far from the third-year pro. Smith will continue to have wide receivers Eric Decker and Jeremy Kerley as well as tight ends Jeff Cumberland and Jace Amaro at his disposal. Now add in the skills of veteran Brandon Marshall, who was injured late in 2014 but still managed to catch eight touchdown passes – equaling the total of Jets’ wide receivers this past season.
