It’s no secret that offensive guard Evan Mathis is considered to be one of the best at his position due to his consistency and experience. The Indianapolis Colts didn’t address one of their areas of need in their offensive line either during free agency or even at the 2015 NFL Draft. It’s no secret that the team will soar or sink based on the performance of quarterback Andrew Luck as his pass protection is crucial for their overall success this upcoming season. Should the Colts make a push to bring in a proven veteran like Mathis into the mix?
Considering that Mathis still has a few years left of good football ahead of him, adding Mathis to the Colts’ offensive line would be an incredibly smart move to make. Not only would he be an instant starter but would compliment one of the top offenses of the NFL in 2015.

Since the left guard position is up for grabs during training camps this summer, the Colts could bring Mathis in on a short-term deal to really push the envelope for 2015. The Colts have about $10 million to play with in salary cap space so a deal could be made if they were able to free up some more finances and bring him in to solidify their offensive line.

It’s somewhat surprising to see Mathis last this long without finding a new team but all thoughts considered, he’s trying to make the best decision for his continued career. In an article written by Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald, here is what Mathis had to say about why it’s taking him a while to decide where to finally end up:
"“Exactly what my options are aren’t as clear as they will be in a week or two,” Mathis said. “I haven’t missed anything,” said Mathis, released by the Eagles a month ago. “There’s no rush at all.”"
Of course another reason why he hasn’t found a new home yet could also be teams weary to sign him due to his injury of last year. He missed seven games last season with an MCL sprain but aside from that, hasn’t had any major or recurring injuries.
Since most teams already are set on paper heading into the start of training camps this summer, it could also be that the majority of teams are waiting to see how their own players perform. Should the Colts see some struggling or declining performances on their offensive line, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them make a move for Mathis whose experience and consistency would be a major addition to their team.

While it’s highly unlikely the Colts will throw big money his way, if Mathis still doesn’t have a deal towards the end of training camps, he might very well be willing to bargain for something of lesser value if he’s on a playoff-contending team. The Colts are poised to continue exactly where they left off from last season as they will be heavy favorites to go the distance. They will be a powerhouse of a team that are just a few pieces away from heading straight to Super Bowl 50.
Mathis could be that missing piece they need to really head into the regular season with major confidence and promise. Even though they have good depth at offensive guard on their team, signing Mathis should be a top priority since he’s leaps and bounds better than anyone they currently have at this very moment.
