Green Bay Packers WR Jared Abbrederis suffers concussion

Green Bay Packers receiver Jared Abbrederis was a notable training camp absentee today, and the news isn’t good. According to Jason Wilde of ESPN Wisconsin, Abbrederis suffered a concussion in yesterday’s activities and is now going through the NFL’s standard concussion protocol.

This is a worrying development with Abbrederis, who dealt with concussions while at Wisconsin and had several teams red-flag that issue leading up to the 2014 NFL Draft. In the February prior to his selection by the Green Bay Packers, Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel profiled the issue.

“It was the understanding of two scouts that Abbrederis suffered “three or four” concussions during his four-year career for the Badgers,” McGinn wrote at the time.

Abbrederis insists that he only suffered one diagnosed concussion while playing for the Badgers, but there were multiple instances in his college career, dating back to 2012, where Abbrederis was forced to miss at least a brief stint of playing time with head injuries. “I don’t think it’s that big of a deal,” said Abbrederis. “Teams will see that. I’m not worried about it.

Green Bay has been one of the more cautious teams in the NFL with medical decisions over the past several seasons. While other teams eventually balked at bringing in safety Nick Collins and tight end Jermichael Finley after their career-threatening injuries, Green Bay was the first to say no. Coach Mike McCarthy has often made the point of saying that if either player were his son, he would not want them on the football field.

It’s important to hold off until we hear a further diagnosis on Abbrederis, but this could have a serious impact on his long-term projection with the Packers. As someone who was expected to make plays through the middle of field and potentially chip in on return duties, he would be placed into high-impact scenarios in the situation that he cracks the 53-man roster.

If Abbrederis can return for camp, he’ll resume his competition with the talented Jeff Janis for the fifth spot on the wide receiver depth chart. Given the possible limitations of first-year receiver Ty Montgomery and Abbrederis’ special teams potential, the club would be likely to break camp with six players at the position should he return to full health.
