St. Louis Rams Training Camp: Brian Quick Shining In Return From Injury

Brian Quick proved that he could grow into a featured receiver for the St. Louis Rams in 2014. He set career-highs in games started, targets, receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and yards per game. The most impressive part about Quick’s numbers, he did all of that in just seven games before suffering a serious shoulder injury that caused him to miss the remainder of the 2014 season.

Through the first week-plus of 2015 Training Camp for the Rams, Quick has shown that those early 2014 numbers were no fluke. Quick’s impressive play shows that he is primed for a breakout season in 2015.

If Quick is to have his breakout season, his health is paramount. After his reported career-threatening shoulder injury, Quick has been vigilant in his rehab process. Rams head coach Jeff Fisher took note of that recently when speaking with the St. Louis media.

“Yeah, it was really a remarkable rehab process that he endured,” Fisher said. “There was some question as to whether or not he would ever come back. He’s back. He’s not quite there yet. We’re protecting him.  But I would expect him to play in preseason games and go out and be productive. It’s really good to have him back. He was off to a great start last year.”

Quick has shown good growth in his route running ability, quickness off the line of scrimmage and overall catching ability in recent years. Quick has also been known as a solid presence in the Rams locker room. This will be huge this season as the Rams look to acclimate a new quarterback in Nick Foles.

When asked about assimilating to the locker room, Foles said, “I feel really comfortable. I’ve been fortunate to play for, you know, two great franchises in my career. To be here with these guys in this locker room and how they welcomed me here right off the bat was amazing. The quarterbacks are tremendous. They’re very supportive. We all work together to push each other to be the best we can be, because you never know when you’re going to play. But at the same time, we’re all buddies and we can you know we’ll go through the film and we’ll help each other out. It’s pretty awesome.”

Quick will also have the advantage of having another big receiver who is a deep threat across the field from him, Kenny Britt. With Britt taking the top cornerback in most situations, Quick will be allowed to work against weaker cornerbacks. Quick also benefits from the growth of Stedman Bailey, another deep threat, while he was injured in 2014.

This receiving group, combined with a solid tight end in Jared Cook and a running game that will feature top-10 pick Todd Gurley as well as Tre Mason, Quick should be able to get ample opportunity in 2015. If he continues to shine in Training Camp, Quick could see his numbers similar to the pace for 2014. He was on pace for over 80 targets with 57 receptions and around seven touchdowns. With his recent improvements and the insertion of the deep ball into the Rams offense, look for Quick to become a go-to target for Foles in 2015.
