Brock Osweiler Is Still A Question Mark

Brock Osweiler has been definitively hot and cold this preseason.

The physically gifted 6’7 240 pound quarterback out of Arizona State came out guns blazing in week one of the preseason against the Seattle Seahawks where he posted a swanky stat line of 15-20 for 151 yards and one touchdown.

After tantalizing even the casual fan with this beautiful 57-yard gem to Andre Caldwell — things started to unravel a bit.

It should be noted that even the second-string Houston Texans defense is very good. However, it’s throws like the one below that may make fans equally as wary as they are excited regarding the prospect of Osweiler replacing the legendary Manning under center.

This is a fairly standard hybrid zone defense with a defender simply floating in a middle-to-flat zone. Osweiler’s lack of vision here led to six easy points for the Texans defense who — as they so often do and will have to again this year — carried them.

It’s hard to know what type of decision-making Osweiler possessed naturally since he’s been a backup thus far during his entire tenure in the NFL.

It’s even more difficult to ascertain what he may have learned in this regard by sitting behind a legend given his small sample size.

That said, this was another very poor decision that displayed a dearth of vision and decision-making; and should have led to another interception.

Osweiler had two men open in the middle of the field on a fourth down, and while the play called for a designed roll out and throw to the flat; he simply didn’t read the coverage nor even bother to look at any other receivers.

A fan must take the good with the bad at this stage of the game with a 24 year-old quarterback who will yet again be waiting in the wings this season.

The problem is, there still seems to still be equal amounts of both for Osweiler; which inevitably keeps him in the realm of a “question mark” as a future franchise QB for now.
