Shaun Hill is a respected veteran and one of my personal favorite backup quarterbacks in the NFL. He has a knack for impressive games when teams need him to step up and he has had his fair share of glory as a journeyman backup and occasional starter.
Unfortunately he wasn’t impressive for the Minnesota Vikings this week.
Six of eight for 50 yards with an interception is almost exactly what the Vikings don’t want from their backup quarterback. A player who needs to be on point when inserted into a game can’t turn the ball over and make minor connections with his receivers.
In the words of Vikings fan and writer Adam Carlson:
"Okay, there are jump balls and there are hail mary passes. You DO NOT throw a hail mary at Stefon Diggs againstBrandon Carr and underthrown so badly that it reminds us of a certain play that we won’t talk about by name. Nothing makes me madder than a QB not protecting the ball. And then he DID IT AGAIN!"
Hill’s performance on Saturday night wasn’t cringe-worthy, but it was certainly frustrating and concerning. Hill is a polished veteran and is expected to act like it. He didn’t against the Dallas Cowboys.
Through the preseason, Hill is 25 of 34 for 236 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. That’s inconsistent quarterback play at worst and slightly above average at best. I personally think Hill is better than that and I believe the Vikings coaching staff thinks so as well.
Hill needs to step up. His stock drops this week because it was a concerning indicator of what could happen if Teddy Bridgewater ends up missing time.
