As many of you know, Saturday was the day when NFL teams were required to reach the 53-man roster limit. Difficult decisions are often made because of the talent most teams simply do not want to part from, especially towards the back end of the roster.

Cut-down days are arguably the most difficult days for a head coach because it is a lose-lose scenario; the team loses talent and the player loses his job. This fickle business known as the National Football League reminds us of this every single year.
Along with 53 players on a roster, teams are also able to carry up to ten practice squad players during the year. By Monday afternoon, the Green Bay Packers had completed signing their all-important practice squad of ten members. Most of the names are easily recognizable by Packers fans and come as no surprise.
The list includes the following players: TE Justin Perillo, OL Matt Rotheram, WR Jared Abbrederis, LB James Vaughters, LB Carl Bradford, DT Christian Ringo, T Jeremy Vujnovich, RB John Crockett, WR Ed Williams and CB Robertson Daniel.
The Packers are very fortunate to have these players stay with the team, even after several have received better offers to play elsewhere.

Prior to the signing of cornerback Daniel from BYU on Monday, I was convinced the Packers were holding that tenth spot for the potential return of wide receiver Myles White. As you all know, Green Bay signed receiver James Jones over the weekend and decided to carry just five wide receivers on the roster, which was bad news for White. He was waived with the arrival of Jones.

White had an impressive preseason in which he saved his arguably best game for last. He caught two touchdowns from quarterback Brett Hundley against the New Orleans Saints. It seemed as though White did all he needed to do in order to make the team.
But in one swift move, all of it crumbled for White. He went from making the Packers team, known for their development of skillful wide receivers, to being an outcast with a future hanging in doubt.
Players signing lucrative contracts as free agents often proclaim the “NFL is a business” mantra and this could not ring truer for White. One day, he was preparing to catch passes from MVP Aaron Rodgers and the next, he is looking for a job someplace else.
White worked his tail off the past three offseasons. Joining the Packers as a rookie in 2013, he was only activated for seven games his first season. He saw no action last year but had stuck with the team on the practice squad. It seemed all the pieces were in line for 2015, especially with Jordy Nelson’s season-ending injury leaving Randall Cobb and Davante Adams as the only proven pass catchers on the roster.

James Jones’ availability alone was a miracle for the Packers – let’s not ignore the disaster that Nelson’s knee injury created. And here comes a proven veteran, who has only been away from the team one season, available and willing to recreate some of the magic he had displayed several years ago with the best quarterback in the league. There’s no way the Packers couldn’t bring Jones back to Green Bay.
Unfortunately for White, that signaled the end of his time with the team. White is still unproven but there is nothing keeping a different team from giving him a call and bringing him in before the season starts. The talent is certainly there.
As teams and fans prepare for the start of the season, let’s all remind ourselves of how unpredictable the NFL can be, especially when it comes to the jobs of loyal and hardworking young men trying to make a name for themselves.
