Having Trust in a WR

Players and coaches always speak of trust as being the all-important trait in a quarterback. It is said that a quarterback must have complete confidence in his receivers. What does this mean exactly?

One way to explain it is by showing what Aaron Rodgers likes to see on the field. With under six minutes to play in the second quarter, Rodgers drew the Bears defense offsides, creating one of his trademark “free plays”.

Typically veteran wide receivers recognize the situation and understand that a quarterback wants to take a shot deep here. In other words, break for the end zone! James Jones, despite playing for the Oakland Raiders last season, remembers just what Rodgers wants on a play like this.

Jones turns upfield and has less than a step on his defender. Rodgers heaves up a bomb to Jones as the yellow flags fly and Jones is able to bring down a phenomenal catch. The play was good for 34 yards after the Packers decline the offsides penalty. Looks easy, right?

This was an example of a smart, veteran receiver on the same page with his long-time quarterback.
