Fear the Front Seven
The number of playmakers Dom Capers has at his disposable must be keeping him smiling during the season. His front seven essentially created their own highlight reel against the Chiefs.
Mike McCarthy’s big emphasis was to stop Jamaal Charles and it all starts up front. Mike Daniels played lights out and B.J. Raji continues to light it up after missing all of last season. The Packers held Charles to 49 yards rushing on 11 attempts and 75 yards rushing for the team as a whole. They dialed in on the run-first Chiefs offense and were determined to make Alex Smith beat them through the air.
So when the Chiefs did line up to pass, Green Bay was all over the quarterback. Clay Matthews notched two sacks, one hit, and six hurries, good for a +4.8 grade by Pro Football Focus. Mike Daniels was also relentless with his two sacks and four quarterback hurries, scoring a team-high +5.7 grade for the game. Overall, the Packers sacked Alex Smith seven times on the night, as well as forcing two fumbles and a poor throw by Smith that was intercepted.
Other Packers to get a sack included Nick Perry, Joe Thomas, Jayrone Elliott, and Mike Neal. The defensive line looked simply unblockable all night long.
