Okay, so maybe this is cheating because I said Beckham Jr. has made three teams regret passing on him, and technically the Dolphins are a fourth team added to this list. However, since the Dolphins didn’t technically pass on him, I am not really doing anything wrong here.
With that said, picking at No. 19, the Miami Dolphins should have found a way to move up ahead of the New York Giants to provide Ryan Tannehill with a legitimate No. 1 receiving option to grow with. After taking Tannehill in the Top 10 of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Dolphins headed into the 2014 season with Brian Hartline and Mike Wallace as their feature receivers in the offense. Both players had been given pretty sizable contracts the previous year, but that should not have stopped the Dolphins from making a move up to get the LSU receiver.
Hartline was coming off a PCL injury, while Wallace did not exactly live up to the $60 million they forked over for him during the 2013 offseason. Now, the Dolphins did find a good one in Beckham Jr.’s college teammate, Jarvis Landry, after trading back in the second round twice. But Beckham Jr. plays on a different planet, and impacts the game in a much different way than Landry does.
One year later, the Dolphins shipped Wallace off to Minnesota for nothing, Hartline left for Cleveland in free agency and the team ended up using a first-round pick on Louisville receiver DeVante Parker to fill their void. If they had just found a way to move up from No. 19 to secure Beckham Jr., they wouldn’t be wondering today when they are going to see production out of their first-round draft pick.
