Fred Jackson Injury: Seattle Seahawks to lose key depth?

facebooktwitterreddit

Seattle Seahawks superstar running back Marshawn Lynch missed today’s Monday Night Football battle against the 0-3 Detroit Lions with a hamstring injury he suffered in last week’s shutout win over the Chicago Bears, and the injury news at the running back position doesn’t get any better for the ‘Hawks. Veteran Fred Jackson, who caught five passes and had five carries for a solid 26 yards coming into today’s game, suffered an injury in today’s game.

According to the fine folks at NFL Injury News, F-Jax walked “slowly” off of the field following the injury, and both this account and Around The NFL speculate that this could be an ankle injury for the 34-year-old Coe product.

Jackson is well-regarded for his toughness, as it’s pretty hard for a 34-year-old running back who has played since 2007 to be anything but tough. But we’ve seen Jackson solider through MCL sprains and other notable injuries in the past, and he’s somehow missed just two games in the past two seasons despite his age.

Although the injury initially appeared to be a potentially significant one for Jackson, it “doesn’t appear to be serious”, and the former Buffalo Bills three-down running back is questionable to return.

Lynch will be on the mend and figures to be ready to face the Cincinnati Bengals next week, so Jackson’s injury won’t be an issue for this team going forward if he only misses a game. There aren’t many details available, but even losing Jackson for the full game today is a blow worth noting. Thomas Rawls, who was on the field slightly less often than F-Jax prior to this injury, has struggled to just 19 yards on ten carries against the Lions defense after toasting the Chicago Bears last week with 104 yards on just 16 carries.

The Fred Jackson injury takes away the Seahawks best pass-catching back and veteran depth for Lynch, though it’s not like he’s been much of a factor this season with just 15 touches. That said, he has been efficient when given the opportunity to play, as he turned four targets into two catches for 33 yards and three carries into 21 yards today against the Lions.

Hopefully the veteran hasn’t sustained an ankle injury of significance, because the Seahawks know that he has a role to play in this offense. He’s shown that he still has something left in the tank, and his role on passing downs and as the team’s veteran hand become all the more important if Lynch is hurt.
