Sure the Pats shipped Mallett off to Houston last year for a 7th round draft pick, but they did spend a 3rd round pick on him in 2011, and Bill Belichick must have seen something he liked then. If you hadn’t heard, the Patriots have a pretty good quarterback already, so I don’t see Mallett challenging him for the starting spot. They also like Jimmy Garoppolo, so Mallett would likely be No. 3 on the depth chart, a spot he is very familiar with from his rookie season.
Being on an NFL team without having any pressure of potentially starting may be one of the best things for Mallett’s career at this point. He’s shown some talent, but his attitude issues have been all too obvious and he needs to sort them out if he wants to have NFL success. There’s nobody better to learn from than Tom Brady when trying to figure out how to carry yourself with poise and control while still bringing an intense emotional spark.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see the Patriots try to snag Mallett, but I don’t imagine they’d pay him very much, and they probably would want to see him prove that he can handle himself professionally before signing him to a multi-year deal. This could be an excellent opportunity for Mallett to go back to square one and learn from the best, but it could also lead to him spending the rest of his career buried on a depth chart, never developing into a truly talented passer.
