Quarterback Carson Wentz should be on the top of the Los Angeles Rams’ wishlist in the 2016 NFL Draft.

The Los Angeles Rams have a strong roster with great talent on both sides of the ball. If they could just figure out their quarterback situation, the Rams would have a legitimate chance to make a strong postseason run. Guys like Nick Foles and Case Keenum simply are not going to get the job done. Before they make their debut season in Los Angeles, the Rams need to find a legitimate quarterback to build around.

The Rams have put a ton of resources into their defense, offensive line and the running back position. It is time for the them to do what they can to nail down the quarterback position, and targeting North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz in the 2016 NFL Draft is the answer.

Wentz is the hot name at the Senior Bowl this week. After an incredibly impressive career at NDSU, Wentz is looking to prove himself against the best competition in the country. So far so good, as Wentz clearly looks like the best quarterback on the Senior Bowl roster.

Measuring in at over 6-foot-5, and weighing 233 pounds, Wentz has ideal size to be a quarterback at the NFL level. He also shows great arm strength, fantastic accuracy and nice touch on his passes. Physically, Wentz has it all to be a star at the next level, and it is obvious why he is receiving so much attention at the Senior Bowl.

Wentz simply looks like he belongs. His performance against top-level competition has driven him into legitimate top five consideration.

The Rams do not pick until the 15th overall selection. If the hype on Wentz settles and he is available for them at the 15th pick, great! It would be an easy decision for them to simply sit back and grab their quarterback of the future. That being said, a trade up into the top ten will probably be needed.

Obviously, this will all depend on how the beginning of the draft goes. The Cleveland Browns stand out significantly as the team in the top five who needs a quarterback. If is far from a guarantee that Cleveland takes a QB, but it is probably the most likely option for them.

There has been a lot of talk at the Senior Bowl this week that Wentz could be their guy at number two. If that is the case, there is nothing the Rams can do. A trade up from number 15 to the top overall spot to get over the Browns is far too costly. However, if the Browns take fellow QB Jared Goff (probably more likely) or select a player at another position, the Rams could get in position to strike.

There is plenty of hype around these quarterback prospects, but there is not significant need from the teams selecting at the top. The Browns have an obvious need, and there has been plenty of talk around the Dallas Cowboys taking a quarterback at number four, but it is unlikely that any other team in the top five would take one.

As for the rest of the top ten, the San Francisco 49ers at number seven appear to be the only team with a quarterback need, and new head coach Chip Kelly will probably want to see what he has in Colin Kaepernick or maybe even Blaine Gabbert. The thirst for the quarterback position in the NFL is real, but the teams selecting at the top will probably be looking in another direction.

If the Browns pass on Wentz and the Cowboys go in another direction, the Rams should aggressively look to trade into the top ten. This would allow them to land their much-needed franchise player at the quarterback position.

Wentz is a talented prospect with an incredibly bright future. He would be the perfect player to lead the Rams into Los Angeles. Coupled with running back Todd Gurley and a strong defensive unit, Wentz could be the guy to take the Rams to the next level.

Quarterback is far and away the most important position in football. Spending a significant price to solidify the position is a move the Rams would be wise to make.
