There were some rumors recently on the Houston Texans having an interest in quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Thankfully, they’re steering clear from the media circus it would bring.

It’s no secret that the Texans are in dire need of a reliable, consistent and smart quarterback able to be that missing catalyst on offense. Of course it’s that time of year again that rumors will circulate on what teams plan to do in acquiring the missing pieces they need to contend this offseason.

Kaepernick‘s agents have made it clear that they are seeking a trade for their client as he’s no doubt unhappy with how things are going down with the San Francisco 49ers. Considering that he’d have to go into training camp to compete for a starting quarterback spot with Blaine Gabbert, he knows he’s a capable starter that with the right team, can rekindle his past glory.

Could that team be with the Texans? Well, before everyone gets too excited, Houston Chronicles sports writer John McClain tweeted this out to confirm any acquisition of Kaepernick is indeed out of the equation for the Texans:

The Texans are smart in not buying into the hype and media circus that Kaepernick would bring.

If the Texans want to finally address their need at quarterback once and for all, it all comes down to the 2016 NFL Draft. The best teams that are always contending build their rosters through the draft as it’s the only way to go about things to ensure long-term success.

In an article written by ESPN.com, the Texans have already been confirmed to have had interviews with five quarterbacks at the 2016 NFL Combine. They’ve sat down with Jared Goff, Paxton Lynch, Carson Wentz, Connor Cook and Christian Hackenberg.

Any one of these fine quarterbacks would be a good selection to make when they’re on the clock at No. 22. To have brought in someone like Kaepernick via free agency wouldn’t have been wise since his style of offense isn’t really how the Texans go about things.

The Texans are more of a run-oriented team and are developing a solid wide receiver corps to really push the envelope offensively over the next few years. They’re not built for a hybrid quarterback that tends to rely more on his legs than his actual accuracy, arm strength and making smart decisions on the football field.

It would be best for the Texans to use their first-round draft choice on the best quarterback available and start developing him the right way. Continue to add a supporting cast around him until he puts all the pieces together and turns the Texans into a contending team able to go the distance in the NFL Playoffs.

Thankfully, the Texans have the right leadership regime in place to not have pulled the trigger on using all their resources to acquire Kaepernick. It’s best they stick to their tried and true methods of going about things the right way and draft their future franchise quarterback.
