All throughout the offseason, both sides were involved in a battle over his initial worth, guaranteed money and the fact that he wanted to get the long-term contract he rightfully deserves. Make no mistake about it, Miller has been the prime example of what being a professional both on and off the field encompasses.

Miller was the catalyst on a Broncos’ defense that shut down one of the top offenses of the NFL in Super Bowl 50. Miller put on a clinic against the Carolina Panthers and ended the game earning MVP honors. Ever since then, he’s been at a standoff with the Broncos for making him get a contract worthy of making him one of the highest paid players that doesn’t play quarterback.

So far in his career with the Broncos, Miller totaled 210 tackles, 17 forced fumbles and 60 sacks. He’s been an impact player that aside from just one season, consistently totaled double digit sacks. All throughout these intense contract negotiations, Miller made it clear that he’s made his home in Denver and wants the long-term stability to have the option to end his career in Mile High City.

The Broncos, unlike many other teams in the NFL, actually got it right with one of their homegrown players.

Someone that was drafted by the Broncos back in 2011 with intentions of being one of their key franchise players, Miller has lived up to and exceeded all expectations from his rookie contract.

Miller has been a key defensive player that not only delivers on the gridiron but is an established leader in the locker room. Most teams tend to forget that players like Miller don’t come along very often as it is important to take care of your own when it comes to giving them a contract extension.

Teams need to remember that rewarding your homegrown players goes a very long way in sending a clear and direct message that if you perform on an elite status, you’ll be taken care of. Of course these days it’s all about business but at the end of it all, patience is key and an understanding that long-term contracts with key players only makes both sides better.

Overall, it’s great to see that the Broncos got this deal done right before the deadline to finally move on from this matter. They got it right with securing one of the best pass rushers playing in the NFL and can now do their best to defend their current Super Bowl championship heading into the upcoming season.

Money isn’t everything in life as Miller from the start of all this wanted to be in the long-term plans of the Broncos as now, he’s gotten that and now everyone can move on towards what awaits them in 2016.
