In the first Sunday Night Football game of the 2016 NFL season, the New England Patriots will travel out west to play the Arizona Cardinals. Both teams are coming off of championship game losses last season and are also legitimate Super Bowl contenders for 2016.

The biggest story here is Jimmy Garoppolo starting at quarterback for the Patriots. Garoppolo is stepping in for the suspended Tom Brady who will miss the first four games of the season. Filling Brady’s shoes will be incredibly difficult for Garoppolo, but he is a talented passer who knows the Patriots’ offense well.
Bill Belichick and company would obviously love to have Brady available, but Garoppolo is in a good position to succeed. Expect Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman to be an ever larger focal point of the offense.
However, Garoppolo will be facing one of the best defensive units in the NFL. The Cardinals’ defense is loaded all over the field, especially with the return of star safety Tyrann Mathieu from his knee injury.
It should especially be a strong battle when the Cardinals have the ball. Carson Palmer has led an impressive offensive attack in recent years. They are also going to get better with more snaps for dynamic running back David Johnson.
The Patriots also have a strong defensive unit. Linebackers Dont’a Hightower and Jamie Collins lead a deep and talented unit who will put up a strong fight against Palmer and company.
